The best MCP servers for people who run websites

Updated October 30, 2026

The best MCP servers for people who run websites cover the jobs you already do by hand: testing pages, analytics, SEO, code, payments and your CMS. That means Chrome DevTools MCP or Playwright, Google's Analytics server, DataForSEO, GitHub and Cloudflare, Stripe, and a server for your CMS. You don't need more than five or six. Every server you add is more tools for the model to choose between.

There's no single winner here, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling one.

So instead of a ranking, sort by one question: can it change things, and can you take a change back? A read-only server can't hurt you; a server that writes to a live site, a store or a repo should show you the change first and give you a way back. Where a server sits on that line matters more than its star count.

The short list

GitHub stars are as of October 30, 2026. "Remote" means a hosted URL you paste into Claude or ChatGPT. "Local" means it runs on your computer, usually through npx or Python.

Stars tell you how many developers bookmarked a repo. They don't tell you whether it fits your work. A WordPress freelancer gets more from a 140-star CMS server than a 54,000-star browser tool they'll open twice a year.

Testing and debugging pages

Chrome DevTools MCP comes from Google's Chrome DevTools team. It lets your assistant open Chrome, record a performance trace and pull out what's slow, and check network requests, screenshots and console messages. Its README notes that performance tools may send trace URLs to Google's CrUX API for real-user data, and you can turn that off with --no-performance-crux.

Playwright MCP from Microsoft drives a browser through accessibility snapshots instead of screenshots, so it works with any model. It's the one I'd pick for "fill in the contact form and tell me what happens". Install line: npx @playwright/mcp@latest.

Both run locally, which means they work in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and the ChatGPT desktop app, but not in ChatGPT on the web.

Analytics and SEO

Google Analytics MCP is Google's own server for GA4, still labeled experimental. By default it uses the Admin and Data APIs with the analytics.readonly scope, so it runs reports and realtime reports and can't change your property. Write tools such as create_property_annotation only appear if you add the --allow-write flag and the analytics.edit scope. Left at the default, it's the easiest yes on this list.

DataForSEO MCP wraps DataForSEO's API: keyword volumes, SERP results, backlinks. It has a hosted URL (https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp) with OAuth, or you run it locally with API credentials from your DataForSEO account. You pay DataForSEO for the API calls, not for the server.

Code, hosting and payments

GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official one, hosted at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/. If your site's code lives on GitHub, it lets the assistant read issues, open pull requests and search code. Pull requests give you a review step, but the server also has push_files, create_or_update_file and merge_pull_request, so it can change a branch without one. The local version has a --read-only flag if reading is all you want.

Cloudflare runs a family of remote servers. The one it now recommends is the Cloudflare API server at https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp, which gives broad access across Cloudflare's APIs. There's also a Browser Run server that fetches pages, converts them to Markdown and takes screenshots. Be careful pointing the API server at a production account: a change it makes there is a real change.

Stripe MCP is hosted at https://mcp.stripe.com and signs in with OAuth (or an agent API key). It calls the Stripe API for you and searches Stripe's docs and support articles. Its money-moving tools (send_money, transfer_money, convert_currency) are marked as needing human confirmation, and Stripe tells you to switch on your client's tool-approval setting too. From December 2026 it stops accepting old secret and restricted keys without the Agent tag, so connect with OAuth or a new agent key.

Your CMS

This is the category that matters most if you build or look after sites, and where a way back matters most, because a CMS server edits the thing your visitors see.

WordPress MCP Adapter is the official WordPress project. It's a free plugin (version 0.7.1 as of October 16, 2026) that exposes abilities registered through the Abilities API as MCP tools. Two catches. It only does what your plugins have registered as public abilities, so a fresh install has little to offer. And it authenticates with Application Passwords, which its own docs say means web Claude and ChatGPT can't connect to it on their own. More in our WordPress MCP Adapter explainer.

Kitepod (we make it) is a free remote server plus a WordPress plugin: you add https://kitepod.com/mcp to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client, sign in with OAuth, and the assistant gets 51 tools across posts, media, page builders, WooCommerce, SEO and theme code. Ordinary content edits run straight away and are snapshotted so you can reverse them, while plugin installs and updates wait for a person under the default policy. It doesn't run a model, so it costs nothing. The wider set of WordPress options is on the WordPress MCP page.

WPVibe is another hosted WordPress server, from the team behind the SeedProd page builder. SeedProd's April 2026 launch post says it works in claude.ai and ChatGPT with one-click authorization, reaches the full REST API and discovers plugins' abilities on 6.9+. The limit is volume: its free plan stops at 100 tool calls a day and Pro at 500, with paid plans from $99 to $899 a year. If you're weighing the two, the Kitepod vs WPVibe page has the details.

Novamira is the open-source option (AGPL-3.0) for developers. It registers its tools through the Abilities API on WordPress 6.9+ and gives an agent PHP execution, WP-CLI and filesystem access. That's a lot of reach, and its own README says it's for development and staging sites, with backups. A read-only mode for production is part of its paid Pro version.

Webflow MCP is Webflow's official remote server. It signs in with OAuth and pairs with a companion app in the Webflow Designer, so the assistant can work on the live canvas. If your sites are on Webflow, start here.

Docs and notes

Context7 feeds your assistant current documentation for libraries and frameworks, so it stops writing code against APIs that changed two versions ago. Hosted at https://mcp.context7.com/mcp; a free API key raises the rate limits.

Fetch is one of the seven reference servers the MCP project maintains. It grabs a page and converts it to Markdown. Simple, read-only and useful for "read this competitor's pricing page".

Notion now points everyone to its hosted remote server rather than the local open-source one, which it no longer actively supports. Useful if your client briefs and site plans live there.

How to pick

  1. List the five jobs you do every week on your sites. Not the ones you'd like to do.
  2. Match each job to one server. If two servers overlap, keep one.
  3. Add read-only servers first. Analytics, SEO data and docs can't break anything.
  4. Add write servers one at a time, and only after you know how to see and reverse what they change.
  5. Check the official MCP Registry at registry.modelcontextprotocol.io for anything you couldn't match.

Where you use them matters too. ChatGPT on the web only connects to remote servers. The ChatGPT desktop app, Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor run local ones as well. There's more on that split in Claude MCP servers.

What goes wrong

The model calls the wrong server. With GitHub, Cloudflare and a CMS server all connected, "update the homepage" is ambiguous. Name the server in your request, or switch off the ones you don't need for this chat.

Too many tools. Some servers expose dozens of tools each. Stack five of them and the model has a long list to pick from on every request. Fewer servers usually means better choices.

A local server won't start. Most need Node.js or Python installed. "npx: command not found" means Node is missing or your app can't see it.

A write you can't take back. Read what each server does on a write before you connect it to anything live. If the answer is "it just does it", test it on staging first.

Finer points

By GitHub stars on October 30, 2026, the MCP project's own reference servers repo leads with 91,696, followed by Context7 (63,964) and Chrome DevTools MCP (54,493). Popular with developers isn't the same as useful for running a website.

Are MCP servers free?

Most servers are free to run. What costs money is the service behind them: DataForSEO charges for API calls, Stripe for payments, and some hosted servers cap free use. Kitepod and the WordPress MCP Adapter are both free.

Are MCP servers safe?

Only as safe as what they can do and who made them. Prefer official servers from the vendor, give each the narrowest permissions you can, and treat any server that writes to production as you'd treat a new contractor with the keys.

Which MCP servers work in ChatGPT?

On the web, remote ones, added as plugins from a URL. The ChatGPT desktop app also runs local stdio servers (Settings → MCP servers → Add server), so the local servers on this list can run there.
