WP Umbrella vs Kitepod: Two MCP Servers, Two Jobs
Updated October 31, 2026
WP Umbrella already has an MCP server. It's hosted, it has 71 tools, and Claude can reach it from the connectors directory in a couple of clicks.
So if you came looking for a WP Umbrella alternative because you want AI on your client sites, you might not need one. WP Umbrella's tools are built for maintenance: updates, backups, database optimization, security settings. Kitepod's are built for the other half of a care plan, the edits inside each site. Content, menus, page builders, global styles, theme code.
For most agencies the answer is both, in the same chat. Ask one server which sites need attention, and ask the other to make the change the client asked for.
The two servers, side by side
As of October 2026. WP Umbrella's price is from its pricing page; everything else is from its help center.

| Price | €1.99 a site a month; paid Security add-on | Free, unlimited sites and tool calls |
| MCP server | Hosted, at https://mcp.wp-umbrella.com/, 71 tools | Hosted, at https://kitepod.com/mcp, 51 tools |

What WP Umbrella's 71 tools are for
The help article for the connector draws a clear line. Tools that only read run straight away, so you can ask which sites have pending updates or a failed backup and get a live answer. Tools that change something wait for your confirmation: updates, backups and backup settings, database optimization, security and firewall settings, and more.
WP Umbrella's connector doesn't take a backup automatically before an update, so its own article tells you to ask for one first. Plugin updates do default to Safe update mode, which rolls a plugin back if its update fails.
None of the changes it lists touch content. Rewriting the About page or fixing a Bricks section isn't the job it's built for.
What only Kitepod reaches
Kitepod talks to WordPress itself. On the Lumen Optometry site, say, your assistant could rewrite the five service pages, swap the photos in the frames gallery, add a new optometrist to the staff page, and change the header color in global styles.
Design changes are the ones a client sees first, so they're staged. A global style or template edit lands on a preview link you can send the client, and nothing goes live until you publish the change set. More on how that hangs together is on WordPress MCP.
The maintenance Kitepod skips
WP Umbrella does the work that happens while you're asleep, and Kitepod doesn't try to. Scheduled backups, kept for 50 days. Uptime monitoring around the clock. Performance tracking. White-label reports with your logo and colors. With the Security add-on, a firewall with virtual patching, malware scanning and an activity log.
Kitepod only acts when someone asks. It has no schedule, no alerts and no reports.
Pricing for a 12-site freelancer
Say you look after 12 sites. WP Umbrella at €1.99 a site is €23.88 a month, plus the Security add-on on any site that needs it.
Kitepod costs nothing on those 12 sites, and nothing on 120.
Wiring both into one Claude chat
- In Claude, open Customize → Connectors, find WP Umbrella in the directory and connect it, choosing which sites it can see. If it isn't listed, add
https://mcp.wp-umbrella.com/as a custom connector. - Install the Kitepod plugin on each site you edit (Plugins → Add New → Upload; WordPress 6.4+, PHP 7.4+), click Connect in wp-admin and pick the WordPress user.
- Back in Claude, use + Add → Add custom connector, paste
https://kitepod.com/mcp, sign in to Kitepod and click Allow.
Now one prompt can use both:
Use WP Umbrella to find which of my sites still runs an outdated version of Yoast, then on the Lumen Optometry site use Kitepod to rewrite the meta descriptions on the five service pages.
If you're packaging this as a monthly service, WordPress care plan covers what goes in one, and ManageWP vs Kitepod compares the other big maintenance dashboard.
Finer points
How much does WP Umbrella cost?
€1.99 a site a month, per its pricing page in October 2026, with a paid Security add-on for the firewall, malware scanning and activity log.
Does WP Umbrella have an MCP server?
Yes. It's a hosted MCP connector with 71 tools that works with Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT in developer mode, Cursor and other clients that support remote MCP servers.
Can WP Umbrella's MCP edit posts or pages?
Its help article lists maintenance changes (updates, backups, database optimization, security settings) and doesn't mention editing content, as of October 2026.
Does WP Umbrella back up a site before an AI-run update?
Not automatically. Its help article says to ask for a backup explicitly before updating. Plugin updates default to Safe update mode, which rolls back a failed plugin update.
Does Kitepod do backups or uptime monitoring?
No. Kitepod snapshots each change so you can undo it for 90 days, but it isn't a backup service and it doesn't watch your sites.
